In 2009 an awesome conference took place. No G8 countries were involved and the big politicians typical of an international event stayed out of it. So what conference was this?
Well, it went down in Copenhagen and it was all about happiness in the workplace. Dr. Srikumar Rao was one of the speakers and gave a great speech on the 2 traps everyone needs to avoid if they want to be happy.
Check out this video. You can watch the entire speech here. (It’s just 18 minutes)
Dr. Rao is a revolutionary in business school. He created the course, Creativity and Personal Mastery, which is the only business school course with its own alumni association. It’s big stuff and has even been covered in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the London Times, the Independent, Time, the Financial Times, Fortune, the Guardian, Business Week and dozens of other publications.
FinerMinds has actually featured Dr. Rao before and we’ve got an awesome interview with him. It’s in two parts and a must-listen for anyone wanting to advance personally and professionally.

What stood out for me here in Dr. Rao’s talk was the way we create our mental models by restating them to ourselves in our self-talk. His description of someone absorbed in the beauty of the universe as it is rather than trying to make it fit their model of a perfect universe was moving and something I hope to remember.
