“You Know You’re in Book Love When … ”
By Steve Leveen from the Huffington Post
My Twitter pals recently surprised and delighted me when I posted this question: “You know you’re in book love when … ” Here are some of the responses:
“you want to read aloud to whoever will listen!”–twitter.com/hchybinski
“…you recommend it to everyone even strangers.”–Sara Anderson @DIYSara
“…you stay up all night to finish in one sitting with no concern about how hard it will be to get through work the next day.”–Ridge Walker @ridgewalker
“…you read your friend’s birthday present b4 he gets it.”–@rufalena
…you think the only thing better than going to sleep with a good book…is with a man who’s just read one.”–Molly Block @mollyblock
Now I’d like to cast this book-love net wider, to readers of this Well-Read Life blog, and offer Levenger prizes for the most captivating completions to that sentence.
Book love defined
Just to make sure we’re all on the same page, I describe book love as that feeling you get when you can’t wait to get back to your book. As I describe in my Little Guide, book love is a lot like romantic love. It’s a feeling, while you’re going about your workaday duties, of being beckoned by your book so the two of you can be together again. That’s a very good feeling.
You’ve been in book love before, or else you wouldn’t be reading this. But are you in book love at this very moment?
Be honest now—how frequently are you reading a book you can’t wait to get back to?

you are still in the book even when you are away from from it. Eating, Sleeping, Bathing, Traveling, Working, Resting doing every thing with the book in your mind.
You know you’re in love with a book when…
You put off reading the last chapter because you don’t really want the book to end.
(Books that I did that with included “Beyond Positive Thinking” by Dr. Robert Anthony, “Miracle Metaphysics” by Robert B. Stone, “The Way of QiGong” by Ken Cohen–and lots more.)
You know you are in love with a book when you actually miss the characters when you have finished the book and you want to start reading it again…
You know you are in love with a book when…
…You subconsciously show it off as a badge of honour on public transport, hoping people will notice it and comment on what impeccable (yet wholly original) taste you have
You know you’re in love with a book when…
…You subconsciously use it as a badge of honour on public transport, quietly hoping that people will notice and comment on your impeccable (yet quite original) taste
You know you are in love with a book when you won’t lend it to anyone, not even your best friend, even though you talk about this great book you have just read…I just can’t let it go.
…when you buy 2 copies of only the hardcover version with mylar protective covers for each, bubble wrap the 2nd, box it, and store it in a fire-proof safe just in case something happens to the other one.
… you close it (momentarily) in order to check maps and pictures of the places the plot is set on.
you know you are in love with a book when you start identifing yourself with one of the characters and imagine living that person’s life.
Find it difficult to put aside, compels me to procrastinate all other work. Mention about the book to everyone, Love to own it though not willing to share my copy.…and take care of it by lending only to those who know to take care of books, by not folding the corners, never openiong the book fully but read with pages open just near 100 degrees, keep the book properly back in its place everytime its taken out and give all these instructions before letting anyone handle them. It makes them have their own copy.… feel slightly bad but cannot help, being possessive about BOOKS, My best Friends…
The only world that exists for those precious reading moments is the one in the book. All life outside those words comes to a temporary halt.
you know you will name your child after the main character in the book even though you are only ten!! Then you go on to do just that when you grow up!!
