Ben Dunlap, the president of Wofford College, has for some reason or another, an amazing magnetism for Hungarian mentors and friends. And all these Hungarian influences have led him to Sandor Teszler, an amazing person, whose story now carries on as a testament to the humanity and goodness of us all.
This really is an incredibly moving and inspiring story about a Hungarian Holocaust survivor’s life and his legacy. This story spans over a hundred years and moves from Hungary to Britain to Germany and then to the States.
A man who has so much cause to be angry, bitter, and resentful, Sandor Teszler has, instead, inspired compassion and bravery. His kindness was what kept him and his family alive in the death camps and his compassion and courage was what pioneered peaceful integration between the Blacks and the Whites in South Carolina. This tale is as inspiring as it is funny and there is a lot we can take from it. At the end of the speech, Ben Dunlap ends with this note: “This is our task. We know it will be hard.” He is referring to the insatiable, ever lasting need to learn, grow, and experience. I couldn’t agree more with Mr. Dunlap.
