Some of you may have heard about the recent controversy surrounding thepiratebay.org, the file sharing website. It caused a pretty big media splash and brought up some pretty interesting points.
Now I’m not saying we support breaching intellectual copyright laws or pirating people’s hard work, but it’s nice to see an author who really isn’t in it for the money.
Paulo Coelho, author of The Alchemist, has publicly supported giving away his works for free. There’s even a whole blog dedicated to this called PirateCoelho. This website was mentioned by the official Paulo Coelho website too.
I love when authors do this. It not only gets people reading but it also helps spread enlightened ideas.

You can find links to all of Coelho’s works and what’s going on in the media piracy world.

Wow I didn’t there were authors that supported pirating their own works. But I guess that’s how you know that the author really stands by and believes in what they write–when getting the word out becomes more important than “paying up” first.
Though this sort of has a reverse effect though, that actually works in the author’s favor.
Chances are, the people who are downloading pirated copies probably wouldn’t have went and bought it anyway, so Paulo gets more exposure that way.
Then, for those who WOULDN’T settle for a pirated copy, just knowing that the author is not against people downloading his works through piracy will give that group even more motivation to buy his book–because the amount of trust in his writing goes up in their minds
That’s the way I see it anyway.
I like this,
that is just awesome. I read all his books on the market and dont mind buying them, but they are so good. The more people read them the more will be in the “KNOW”.……
