How to Clear Negative or Limiting Belief Patterns Part 1

childLast week in my meditation group, I decided to do a special series of meditations to clear negative / limiting belief patterns or negative issues. I know a lot of you have been wondering what you can do to clear negative / limiting beliefs, and I’m hoping that this article can help you.

Step 1: Getting Clear on your Negative/Limiting Beliefs

First of all, we’ll need to find out what your negative / limiting belief is. Often times the response that I get is (surprisingly), “I don’t think I have any negative / limiting beliefs or I don’t have any issues.” Now, while I am sure that you personally do not have any negative or limiting beliefs, I’m sure you know some people who have certain limitations that you wish they would fix. So let’s start with the first exercise.

I’d like for you to write down 10 things that annoy you about other people. I’m going to take it a step further, write down 10 things that you hate about other people. Be specific. Here are some examples:

  1. I hate it when so and so is very petty about things.
  2. I hate it when person B is always so negative about money.
  3. I hate it when people pretend to like things when they don’t.

Ok, now take time from reading this article, find a piece of paper and write this down. Do it now, don’t wait or you might not do it! ;)

Done? Brilliant! Now let’s review. I want you to go through your list and add a one word description to each sentence. For instance:

  1. I hate it when so and so is very petty about things. (PETTY)
  2. I hate it when person B is always so negative about money. (NEGATIVE)
  3. I hate it when people pretend to like things when they don’t. (FALSE)

Ok, got that? Now, here comes the clincher. All these things that you just wrote down that annoy you about other people? Well, it is something that you are projecting onto to other people, and these people are mirrors to what you are. So if you wrote down: Petty, Negative and False — these are also things that you are. You see, you can’t see in other people what you don’t have in yourself. Many people find it hard to believe that they are also all the things that they don’t like in other people.

The thing is, we get so caught up in the terms, we make it like it is the end of the world. But these are just our dark shadows. And every time you raise your energy you also raise the propensity of your dark shadow. And if you don’t deal with your dark shadow, it will overcome you. There is nothing wrong with having these negative emotions / beliefs. The trick is to accept it and move on — and most of all, to forgive yourself and others.

Now I want you to take a sheet of paper and write down 10 things you like or even love about other people. Not so easy eh? But do it anyway. When you’re done with this list, repeat the same procedure as above and write down a one word description for each sentence. Have a look at your list and try and match up your positive list to your negative list. If it doesn’t match up completely, it is ok — an approximation is also good enough.

Anyway, what we’re going to do next is a compilation of wisdom from different teachers and masters (thanks to Dr Olivia Tee who helped facilitate and compile this). Take your list, and for each negative issue, do the exercise below:

My issue is …………..

Step 1

  1. Is that right/true?
  2. Is that absolutely right/true?
  3. How do you feel when you think that thought?
  4. How do you feel if you are unable to think that thought?

Step 2

  1. All the times that I felt  (insert negative issue) is past, over and history. All the parts of me that is holding that energy is healing now.
  2. I release all belief, judgment and perception that I am _______ and I release all needs to think that thought.
  3. I instruct my subconscious mind to release all belief, judgment and perception that I am _______ .and release all needs to think that thought.
  4. I forgive that thought unconditionally, I forgive myself unconditionally
  5. I love and embrace that thought unconditionally (not the content of it), I love myself unconditionally.

Step 3

  1. I now replace it with  (insert positive thought)  , love, light and good.
  2. I now affirm and believe that I am _____ and instruct my subconscious mind to affirm and believe at all levels of my being that I am _________.

Step 4

  1. I seal in the healing now, and for all times.
  2. Thank you spirit, Angels, God, Higher Self   (insert appropriate higher being).

I found this process to be very helpful in pin pointing my negative issues and starting the process of clearing it. After doing this process we moved on to do some meditations so that we could clear the beliefs on all levels (mental, emotional, etc).  In the next article I’ll let you know what meditations we did and how it has helped us.

Please do this exercise and let me know how it has helped you. Were you surprised by what your beliefs / issues are? Leave a comment below and let me know!

Love and light!

Personally I love this … I am not too fond of the process ‘cuz it forces me to look deep inside myself and acknowledge what a turd I am at times. In the long run though I will be a better person and attract better behavior to me. Funny how these things come to me on exactly the day I am fighting with the very issue addressed. Thank you for writing this I can’t wait for the meditation article!

I am really amazed at how many people we come across in our
daily walk who are so negative and unlikable?

    I like your input.

We have to be more spiritual and spend time with God!

If we want to succeed in life, we need to be more spiritual.
I have been very successful when it comes to dealing with
problems, I give it all to God.

I just spent a few minutes doing this exercise. No, it wasn’t nice to look at the negatives, but if you aren’t willing to look at what lurks in the shadow, you can’t bring it out into the light. Our less than desirable shadow aspects will continue to affect us until we are prepared to release them.

    Great article. Thank you.

Dr. Olivia Tee may choose to forgive herself for plagiarizing.

Yeah, I’m really surprised that the author would take from someone’s work and not reference that person. Byron Katie encourages us all to use and share The Work, but she also asks that we reference thework.com so that people can always return to the original source.

Very interesting. I have heard this before and have even tried that introspection thing on a few things I don’t like about some one else and fail to where I have that particular negative within myself, unless it is hiding because I hate it so much.

On the other hand I do recognize some of those traits within.

In the end it is something all need to look at if we want to move forward to perfection.

Thanks for the share and the reminder.

thank U so much for sharing it! as always, i love U style, help, passion and desire to share it with the world. i am sure that whoever was the original source of the process …it does not matter really..they have received that information from the divine source..the infinite..and ..as we all know…there is no ownership or exclusive right to the divine flow and information.. .. we are all connected ..i applause rather that criticise the source..a big thank U for sharing it!
    with love and gratitude!

I would give this a 9 in terms of helpful. It didnt take long and took just enough time to reflect on my negative side and forgive myself. It brought up for me a certain person who irritates me and helped me to reflect on that similar side of me.
    Thank you

    Nice article.

Personally, my favorite tool to clear negative beliefs is EFT. It can be used at the same time of using the 4 steps in this article. Just say every affirmation while tapping on yourself and it will balance your energy level.

In case you don’t know at all what EFT is, just Google it or go directly to Gary Craig’s website (the founder of EFT) http://www.emofree.com

EFT can be used on everything from clearing old beliefs to installing new positive ones and to clearing physical pain as well as emotional traumas. It’s so easy to use once you learn it. I personally use it every single day!

I started this afternoon and had to take a break and run errands. While I was out I met a lady who is an artist and is willing to point me in a money making direction..She is going to look at my work and introduce me to the local artists.
I got a phone call telling me an art school I want to attend online has an idea to help me get into school. we talk tomorrow morning.
I found out I need hormones and am doing an all organic cream trial. I should be able to buy them thursday.
I came back and finished. This reminds me of the 4th and 5th steps in recovery. The inventory. then we share it with a friend and find out we are just like everybody. clothed with skin…thank you becase i needed this. i will look forward to working with you in the future.

The process is good to use and I found it very helpful. However, I too am disappointed by the potential plagiarism as Berry Terwilliger points out. The entire self-help industry, from Tony Robbins to Joe Vitale, is VERY guilty of this. At least Joe admits he rewrites material from others when he uses it.

That being said, when numerous self-help gurus use/refer to the same ideas, then those ideas probably have a lot of merit and are worth focusing on and using in some manner.

There are certain basic truths and stating them again is not plagarism. This technique is older than either author — it is recognizable as an adaptation of the inventory process of Alcoholics Anonymous, for crying out loud. Truth works.

We all learn from others. In school we learn from our teachers and they in turn have learned from their teachers. We derive ideas beneficial or not from others. Nothing belongs to us, in reality.

Do I mean to say that walking straight on the foot-path is my own creation for myself? Not at all. I learnt from someone, from parents, brothers and sisters.…Very often we don’t give credit to someone. That does not mean we discredit them. We unconsciencely use other’s traits all the time. Our job is to spread that knowledge to all those who want it.

In the end thank your Creator (whatever name you assign) for giving knowledge to that individual as well as passing it on to you. Hani Khaursar simply collected that knowledge from various sources in order to bring it up to you. So say Thank You Hani Khaursar…for providing that information to us.

May our Creator provide us with Abundant Knowledge and Thankfulness and Gratitude.

This seems like a good thought pattern. But I think you need to preface this procedure by getting relaxed, and going into a bit of an altered state so that your mind and spirit are receptive to the suggestions you are giving them. Even some deep breathing for a few minutes with eyes closed would help get you peaceful. Don’t you think it would work better that way?

    Thanks for sharing! Rachel

I love the way you put things.…. easy to understand and to the point.
Recently I came to understand how important it was to really look at what emotions I try to “hide away” from. Now I acknowledge how I feel and it’s amazing to notice how once the emotion has been acknowledged it becomes “handleable”

This is such a fab technique. I just did it today, christmas day. I already knew about what I disliked in others was my own reflection. What stunned me was that as I completed each question, I realised that it was my perception based on cultural differences that were the problem.

And that’s when I felt such a lightness overcome me. Instead of judging the people, all I need do is look at them truly and I get another perspective. Because they really mean no harm — it’s just ignorance of the other on both sides.

    Fascinating process.

    Thank you.
