Morning PhilosophersNotes Tribe! Today we’ll be diving into Focal Point by Brian Tracy.
Focal Point by Brian Tracy
“You can dramatically improve the overall quality of your life far faster than you might think possible. All you need is the desire to change, the decision to take action, the discipline to practice the new behaviors you have chosen, and the determination to persist until you get the results you want.”
~ Brian Tracy from Focal Point
A few words from Brian Johnson:
I’ve learned a LOT from Brian Tracy.
He’s been doing his self-development and sales training work for decades now and I’ve enjoyed a variety of his books and audio programs and newsletters (highly recommend his newsletter if you’re looking for some great practical, motivational wisdom).
Some of my favorites include his books Goals! and Eat That Frog! (great little book about training yourself to the hardest thing FIRST; once you’ve “eaten your frog” for the day, the rest of the day is a breeze
, and audio programs on creativity.
This book, Focal Point, is all about focusing our energy to, as the sub-titles suggests: “Simplify your life, double your productivity, and achieve all your goals.”
And as always, what’s your BIGGEST Aha! moment from this Note and how are you going to implement the wisdom from today into your life? Drop a comment and let the discussions roll! And twitter users, don’t forget the #50days

Hi Team
That opening quote is worth repeating in total — “You can dramatically improve the overall quality of your life far faster than you might think possible. All you need is the desire to change, the decision to take action, the discipline to practice the new behaviors you have chosen, and the determination to persist until you get the results you want.“
Determination, perspiration, persistence, doggedness, cussedness, … whatever you call it, it is a major element in sucess for most of us. And it is so much easier to be persistent at something if you like what you’re doing.
The “I Am Responsible” theme is echoed in all the major teachings. If we say we’re not, then we’re not — we are the tool of whatever thought lead us to say we are not responsible. If we say we are, then we can be. It really is that simple. There is a “sort of” “quantum mechanical” aspect two it. The smallest possible shift in state, from “not responsible” to “responsible” — it just a simple declaration “I am”.
“Everything Is Hard Before It Is Easy.” Certainly my experience, in every dimension I have explored.
The zero based idea has some real power — “Is there anything I am doing right now that, knowing what I now know, I wouldn’t get into again if I were starting over today?” Not always easy to answer. Most of the things I could answer a clear no to I have gotten out of. No regrets, lots of lessons. As for the rest — very hard calls.
Flexibility — I can vouch for that one. I wrote a little application that reminds me every hour to get up and do my basic yoga stretches. I also subscribe to Ray Kurzweil’s daily news feed at kurzweilai.net, and to the-scientist.com daily feed, and to gaiam.com (once zaadz). The Oxford English Dictionary is open on my laptop, google and wikipedia are on my quicklauch bar in Chrome. So I can be said to be practicing flexibility in most realms.
I’m not sure about — “Every minute you spend in planning will save you as many as ten minutes in execution.” Mark Joyner (simpleology.com) is fond of saying ready fire aim. Planning is good, and over-planning is possible. Get out there and try it — don’t plan for perfection, plan for close enough, and be prepared to refine direction. And yes — it is worth spending time planning. When flying, I always cehck weather, check fuel, check for alternate landing sites, give the aircraft a mechanical “once over”, then I go.
“Single-Mindedly One Touching” is something I’m working on, and it seems to be paying dividends.
“Visualization + Idealization” leading to “In this respect, clarity is terribly important. Successful people have tremendous clarity about who they are, what they want, and how they are going to get it.” This certainly works to a significant degree. If we find ourselves in a situation where we have little control, focus what control we have on changing our situation.
.
Ted! Thank you for your additional comments around planning. It helped balance out the idea for me. In my world, I tend to use planning as a delay tactic. That does not mean it is not a valuable skill, just something to be mindful of. “Smart and efficient planning.” That’s something i can use. Best, John
Hi Ted, John. I can see where overplanning may come into play, but who determines that? Is it procrastination or stalling once it gets there? I love to plan, and had been a great procrastinator, so would like a bit more input on this if possible.
Hey, Mark. You’re highlighting an interesting question. For me, I rely on my internal truth teller to tell me when I am entering the land of Delay and Procrastination. He’s usually spot on. I find by trusting that felt sense of my “truth” i usually end up figuring out how something works for me. And that said, what works for me might not work for you. I don’t know if I am being clear or not but to me, it comes down to trusting your own self knowledge and experimenting to find your balance. — J.
I understand what you’re saying, John. Thanks. I’ll be awaiting your angle with “baited” breath. But…but…balance? Aren’t we to be “unbalanced”?
Part 2
This is hard for me — “Time management is really life management, personal management, management of yourself. People who value themselves highly allocate their time carefully.” I can see the power in it, and there is a sense in which I value doing stimulating things, so often avoid the less stimulating. I guess it simply requires me to find a context in which I get paid for doing the stimulating.
“Over the years, thousands of successful people have been asked, “What do you think about most of the time?”
Their answers tend to be the same worldwide. Successful people think about what they want and how to get it most of the time.“
I spend a lot of my time thinking about extending lifespans,a nd creating the tools to empower every individual to meet their own basic needs. http://www.solnx.org is my best effort at present.
I’ve been less than successful at enrolling millions of others in making it happen, and I a getting better at it.
My optimism comes and goes. “Your level of optimism is the very best predictor of how happy, healthy, wealthy, and long-lived you will be.“
I guess, given that I have looked deeply at all the major threats to myself personally and to humanity generally, and I have come up with what I cosider workable solutions to all of them, that I am optimistic. That I have not been more successful at enrolling others tends to work a little against that optimism, and I am still optimistic of achieving exponential growth.
Just have to craft a successful meme.
“The great truths of life are simple. It is amazing how many problems, both personal and social, could be resolved if everyone decided to treat other people the way they would like to be treated.” Doing this. It is simple. I am, for the most part, experiencing having a great life.
“Why Aren’t I at My Goal Already?” Powerful question. Complex answers. Working on it.
“Sharpen Your Focus” some great questions. I’m clear on the answers. http://www.solnx.org contains most of it.
Another great note — thanks Brian and Vishen
A high five to you, the merry memeticist, and best wishes with solnx.org. ~ Tom
LEARNINGS
Good morning, all. As I read today’s note, I was reminded of Peter Drucker’s distinction between effectiveness and efficiency: doing the right thing is more important than doing things right. Doing the right thing is effectiveness; doing things right is efficiency. Focus first on effectiveness (identifying what is the right thing to do).” By late yesterday evening I felt like large parts of the day were overly focused on efficiently completing tasks.
I know when to revisit and play my daily focus … right after meditating … aha! Also, as Brian suggested, I signed up for the Brain Tracy newsletter. He gives a free ebook on goal setting with your sign up — a nice gift.
The other big idea is zero-based thinking, I’m going to revisit my goals/activities for the year and do some re-focusing.
EXPERIMENT
Here’s the exercise I’m going to do later this afternoon as described by Brian Tracy in this 2-minute video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iDbs3vh6KM It involves writing down 10 goals you want to achieve this year, picking the top one, developing a detailed plan, and taking action on it daily. I’m most curious to see how this list aligns to my mission and the projects/activities I’m currently engaged in. A big, happy, meaningful, effective Wednesday to you all! ~ Tom
I really like that. Although our focus should be placed on effectiveness, efficiency still has merit. In identifying what would be efficient at the time (no need to place too much focus) we then can spend most of our energy on being effective.…nice way to evaluate our time/tasks. It kind of reminds me about what I recently read about ego. We cannot rid ourselves of ego but ego does serve a purpose. We can learn to have ego serve than the other way around. I am going to watch the vidoe you mentioned. Brian tracy seems to have a whole smorgusborgh of great ideas!
Happy AM, AM! Thank you for your thoughtful reminder and I love the quote “We cannot rid ourselves of ego but ego does serve a purpose.” It sure makes good sense to remember that it’s a “both/and” proposition. Thanks, Tom
I really love that too Tom. I guess what I’m struggling with is this.….the one big goal that would have the greatest positive impact in my life is to get my book written and published. Yet I’ve got two new training courses to write for clients and a big event to prepare for my VIP client n 3 weeks — these are the things that ‘bring home the bacon’. I need to earn the money and writing is a luxury for me.….OMG I think I’ve just had a Eureka moment. My writing is a ‘luxury’??!! I’ve NEVER thought of it like that before! Thank you Tom from the bottom of my heart for inspiring me to think!
Have a wonderful Wednesday!
Wow, a live Eureka moment. Sounds to me like your writing might now have to take more of a priority in your life. Good luck with that
Thanks for the experiment today, Tom. I’m gonna jump on that forthright (as soon as I’m finished here). I had downloaded the PDF from Tracy’s site, and even have a Brian Tracy folder. His Tweets come regularly throughout the day as well as his emails. It’s all good. Again, thanks. I also have a short list of lists i must make. This will all tie in nicely.
Thanks for sharing the video Tom
“You can dramatically improve the overall quality of your life far faster than you
might think possible. All you need is the desire to change, the decision to take
action, the discipline to practice the new behaviors you have chosen, and the
determination to persist until you get the results you want.”
Love it!
Just taking that quote from the notes alone sums up the power we have. In acknowledging that we alone are actually responsible for eaxctly where we are (no more blaming) we rightfully assume the power we have to shape our future from this very day forward. Today is already created…right now our thoughts and focus are what is creating our tomorrow
Wow, another great note, so much to think about! I’m going to have to go back over these notes again, and again.
From the opening paragraph, the line that sticks out for me, that needs my attention is “the determination to persist until you get the results you want”. I can see how I start out with all good intentions, but don’t persist, I lose momentum, and never quite get the results.
Zero-based thinking, “Is there anything I am doing right now that, knowing what I now know, I wouldn’t get into again if I were starting over today?”. I’m going to ponder this today too.
Chris referred to the single mindedly one touching idea in one of the previous notes. I really need to apply this. I have piles of paperwork all over my desk, as I postpone taking action on it, it just piles up, and then I end up missing things.
I like the visualisation and idealisation idea, something else to add to my list to do.
I’ve certainly noticed that in the time I’ve been doing the PN challenge I have reduced my time in front of the tv, and when I do watch it’s generally good tv. Watched some of the winter olympics yesterday, the pairs iceskating was so inspiring, I still have so far to go with my own skating!!
Why aren’t I at my goal already? As someone who has been trying to lose weight unsucessfully for the last 9 years, I really need to do some thinking about this one.
I bought myself a bigger journal a week ago, with the intention of writing loads in it, but haven’t really taken the step. I’m writing comments on here, but not in my journal, maybe I should start with the journal, then post here. The sharpen your focus questions are all things I would like to spend a lot of time thinking about.
That first quote sticks out for me as well. I see this whole quote as an area of my life that needed work. I often lost task commitment if I didn’t see immediate results be it work, weight loss or any new endevour. Now I really try to keep momentum. Like Brian said in the video it always takes more energy to change direction or get something off the ground. So if I atleast get through the first part and form habits out of these new undertakings they WILL get easier and become fully rewarding. I started to realize somewhere along these notes that the small steps toward any goal really are as important as the goal itself and I am deserving of all the dreams I have. If I am worthy of those dreams then it is my duty to start making small steps toward those dreams. Seeing those small steps through is also a big part of truly enjoying our journey.….
Hi Maxine, great to see so much introspection. I know the feeling about lack of persistence. As Brian says, though, no more if-onlys and what-ifs. I have had my chances many times, and lacked the persistent consistent discipline to make them flourish. I do firmly believe it was all a set-up for me to stage this once-in-a-lifetime accomplishment I am working on now. I insist upon turning all those trials and terrors into tempering of my sword. I allow myself one movie a night, no TV. Days are spent creating. As far as journaling, well, it’s been busy. Your BIGGER journal? Is it working better? =)
One step, one step, one step, one step…I too have been having issues with persistence, but i am determined (lol) to stay at it…this time through, I am determined to be persistent…I mean, what is the alternative? To go back to the way things were??? NEVER. I don’t mind taking a break here and there, but i like the way things look from the higher viewpoints, so here I go, here we all go, one step, one step, one step.…
I haven’t posted for quite a long time but have been extremely busy dramatically changing the course of my life. I have been extremely inspired by Tom Carrol’s daily approach in his “Experiment” section and decided to implement the same approach. I took all my notes from the first few weeks and immediately examined exactly where I need to improve and what I could do right away to start seeing changes. I took note of where I had been caught up in negativity and where exactly I needed more focus.…all the while completely enjoying the whole process and sure sense of freedom it eventually would reward me.
Well, I have news! The results already are outstanding.
Way to go! I am doing the same. It’s been fun to pull everything together and devise my plan. I love that you’re already seeing outstanding results. And, nice to have you back here.
Thanks John.…It feels really really good to be back with my PN Family!
Looking good, AMP. As per your other post and the new position…I applaud you. I am in the position of creating something from nothing, literally. So when Brian Tracy says I can increase that tenfold and I did the math.…ten times nothing? LOL! What it really means is that starting now from scratch I can use all the lessons we are learning here to fully implement the attraction of success. “Is there anything I am doing right now that, knowing what I now know, I wouldn’t get into again if I were starting over today.” A great thought indeed, and totally applicable right now! Time for Zero-based thinking.
Me too with the lack of posting, Isn’t Pn great when we do get back to the ideas and use them to get going again?
#1 I have been working in the same comfortable and safe job for about eight years on and off. I love many of the benefits of my job (the staff, the kids) but realize that I am not being paid what I am worth and decided to start looking elsewhere for new oportunities. That was under two weeks ago. Then just last week I was approached by a former employer about a new position that was created that would immediately double my salary. I have my fingers crossed knowing that what will be will be. Although I am extremely hopeful I have no attachment to the outcome. Instead I am empowered by the knowledge that the more I develop my inner self new oportunites WILL be available and my life will take on a new direction.
That’s wonderful, I so hope that you get that new job
Maxine
Thank you Maxine. I really do have my fingers crossed
Heh heh…no crossing allowed, Andy. Point! I believe if you focus positively on the outcome it will come the rest of the way to you. This reads like the Law of Attraction in action. You were engaged in positive energy looking to better yourself and the Universe came through. Wishing you the best!
AM, how fantastic. Being approached about the position says something wonderful about you. Your new direction just got another vote from the universe! Thanks for sharing that, AM; just that vote alone is very inspiring to me. It’s working for you! Best to you, Tom
That’s awesome AM and a real life example of how all these PN insights are coming together to enable you to create the life you desire and deserve. ‘Knowing what will be will be’ and ‘no attachment to the outcome’ are such powerful beliefs and I am truly in awe of your experience. I wish you all the success n the world!
Well, you know what, I am an awe too, and this group definitely plays a big part in the insights. Like I said before, the notes are truly awesome (so much of the work is done for us). I love them, but the responses and insights from everyone really do it for me
Everyone’s comments and “real world” perspective really help me focus on the things that I can change right now. And I also learned to applaud the places where things are working in accordance with my purpose. Everyone’s story can and should be an example for the rest of us and for that alone I am grateful for the oportunity to inspire others as well.
I have my fingers and toes crossed that this or something even better will happen.
How fun.
just the fact that you have opened yourself to change, that you were approached by a former employer, and know you deserve more, you are letting the universe set the table for your success.
how wonderful… we all support you!
Yepperz! And I have proven to myself that the few little steps toward any goal can make miracles happen. Action is so important but like you pointed out so too is opening up to whatever the universe decides to deliever. Thanks for the support
Re: “a new position that was created” .…. Nice work AM!
As puresue just said .… “we all support you!”
Than k you for your kind words Peter. This group is all about support. I am glad to be back!
way to go you creator you.…Even if you don’t get the job, I think it will be empowering because you will have a reference point of how, when you decided things needed to be different, the universe fell in step. And yes, this place is wonderful for positive support and upward momentum. Congratulations AM
Love your energy!! And yes, I am not banking on the job whatsoever. I would love it but I’ve seen the results a few small changes can produce and that is inspiring. It so completely solidifies all we have been reading…I’ve been reading this stuff for years but I was missing out on a few points such as action and limiting beliefs. It’s nice that it’s all changing and thank You for the comment
2.
20 years ago, I was living in Sydney, and I went to a motivational seminar at my gym. We had to think about 3 questions.
What are your goals at the moment? At the time, it was losing weight, getting fit etc
If you won £millions how would you spend it? new house, car, holidays etc
If you had 6 months to live what would you do? Spend time with friends, family, travel etc
A year later, after returning to London, I was travelling home on the midnight train, after working another late night at work, working weekends, and I realised that the 5 things that were really important to me, (if I only had 6 months to live) weren’t happening, because all my time and energies were going into working at a job, I really didn’t enjoy, but I was doing just because it seemed the natural progression of the career path I was on.
It took me 6 months, but I finally resigned that job, without another job to go to, and this was the first of many times that I would pause, note that I was on the “wrong ladder” (Covey) and readjust my path.
Years later, when I was returning to the workplace after a career break while I had my 3 children, I looked back at all those decisions I had taken to leave jobs. Each one, at the time had seemed such a risk. But EVERY TIME I made that choice, to leave something, I knew was not the right path, my life ended up so much better. Knowing that, has given me the confidence, to go with my gut feel, intuition, call it whatever, and take that step.
Exactly! Our feeling s are really a great indicator of where we are on our path or whether or not we chould change course. Things do always work out. One of the notes spoke about how ten years from now we WILL laugh about what we stressed about and it is so true. The more we start trusting our vibes the more we learn HOW to trust them. It has a lot ot do with FAITH. FIRST realize what we want. APPRECIATE where we have been and all that we have been given and earned. INTEND your wishes to come true. TAKE action, even the simlest action toward your goals. HAVE faith that the universe WILL deliver!
#2 After four years of being complacent and comfortable I joined the gym! Big high five for me. I never thought that I would ever work out at 6am and actaually love it! In sync with Brian Tracey, time management is life management and my tomorrow always starts before I go to bed at night. Now I plan ahead…have my gym clothes set out and feel great about going to bed with a plethora of intentions set for tomorrow
Side note.…while siging up for my gym membership the manager of the YMCA started talking about children and programming. I causually mentioned a project I had proposed in the fall focused on at-risk youth of low income familes. Squashed by the lack of response I recieved, I just let it be. As she was finalizing my membership she stopped short and said she would back be up for sure. She thought the program could even get goverment funding and was sctually looking for someone to spear head a similar initiative. Our first meeting is scheduled for some time next week!
love it! let us know!
Well done for joining the gym, that’s one huge step to take. All you have to do, is go!
(Sadly many people sign up but then don’t attend). However, with the energy I’m feeling in your posts today, I don’t think you’re going to have that problem.
Re the new project, wish you lots of luck on your first meeting.
Maxine
I really like the questions Tracy proposes to help us sharpen our focus and develop a personal strategic plan. The insights gained from powerful questions can help redirect our focus to achieve what is most important. Years ago I attended a workshop in which the presenter gave us six index cards and asked us to write down the six most important things we would do if we only had six months to live (one item on each card). As the presentation continued, the speaker had us remove one card at a time as the six months ticked down — five, four, three, two — until you had one card left representing one month before you would die. What you are left with is the number one most important thing you would want to accomplish before you die. So ultimately the question becomes — WHY WAIT?? Give it a try and create your own bucket list! Namaste, PN Tribe
Hiya Angela. The thought that crossed my mind as I read that part was “Now know where all the interviewers got that question. Where do you see yourself five years from now?” I always wanted to say, “Well, geez, certainly not here looking for a job!” I believe goals and timelines are getting more crucial to my success as each day goes by. I know that’s nothing new to y’all, but this starving artist needs reinforcement of those facets of life in order to survive and thrive.
Visualization + Idealization. This is one to right down in my journal. I took a hard look at where I see myself five, ten years from now and there was not only one direction but many. I took those steps and then took a leap of FAITH toward my new life. I wanted to see a fitter, healthier me.…so I joined the gym (which I had not done in 4 years). I envision myself continuing with energy healing so I signed up for my second level in REIKI (which I had put off for 2 years) and started appreciating, intenally and vocally, what I love about my present job while searching for new avenues (that are currently opening up for me as I type). I am truly developing a trusting mindset and am loving the results. For the first time I am really energized and hopeful about the near future and all it will bring!
Good note, Brian. But isn’t the concept of “single handling” contradictory to that of kai zen, which I believe you discussed in another note? Do a little each day and not worry that it won’t all get done today, but eventually you’re “bound to be successful.”
Hi Melinda
My thoughts on the contradiction would be as follows:
Let’s say I have a goal to swim 50 lengths, but I feel I can only swim 20 at the moment. The first time I start toward my goal, I would swim 20 lengths. Then I would use the kaizen principle to increase my distance by say 2 lengths each time I swim. Each time I swim, I would ensure I focused on completing the task at hand, before going onto the next task. By concentrating on my focus on my goal, swimming 50 lengths, and my method of achieving it, adding 2 each time, I would eventually achieve my goal, using the combination of focus and kaizen.
morning all… i need to re-read these notes…often i feel that i dont accomplish what i should mostly when i dont have the structure of a work schedule..(im on vacation this week at home) i feel like i can take my time and not plan… dont think that concept is working for me..
so much to fit in in a day! at least i am now on time..“successful people are always on time” is my new mantra..
im off to subscribe to brian tracy’s newsletter… but wont that also be another serving on my already full plate?
Howdy do, Sue. I don’t just read the PNotes, I rewrite them (in my journal…one page) then I distill that further on a whiteboard before creating my post(s) in Word for here. It’s a two hour process. I’m looking for ways to shorten it, but I want the records and full absorption I gain from this process. If that’s as short as it gets, great! I know I get far more from writing things down. Reading and highlighting are okay, not really my thing.
You’ll love Brian’s newsletters and emails. I also follow him on Twitter. There’s never a shortfall of information throughout the day.
i too get more from re writing in my own words and i know i could absorb more but i dont have the extra hours you do.. Happy that you do though!
i do feel accomplished as much of what we are doing here in PN i do daily on my own … Pn and all of you just give me that extra boost and new ideas..
you all are my re writes…
thanks
Ahem, Sue, I’m gonna refer ya back to Day 4 and The Big Leap. The Notes didn’t cover this but in the book Gay talked about Einstein Time. All our time comes from US…not elsewhere. I have only 24 hours, no more than you. If you want to do something the time is there, within you. I know I am squandering my time all over the place, because I am not where I want to be. But I am clawing at the walls in an effort to scale them or knock them down. Making habits and breaking habits. I feel if I do not make the utmost of this opportunity wonderfully set before me I will surely regret it some day, as I may regret other things had I the inclination to do so.
Cheers! =)
OK.…wow.…..so how long does that take you in the run of a day? I think in order for the notes to be more effective for me I am going to have to start them in the morning. I used to read them during lunch.…and answer in the late afternoon/evening but it hasn’t been working lately. The morning it is.….oh no, ANOTHER new intention…;)
I am a fan of Brian Tracy and his daily newsletters are awesome daily lessons to learn and practice everyday life.
I am responsible, Yes, I am responsible for all victories and all losses!! This is charging us to new heights.
The willingness to be response-able and be pro-active. Introduce new positive behaviors and practice them.
Flexibility is the most important single quality you can develop to survive and thrive in the twenty-first century. Flexibility entails openness, receptivity, and the willingness to try new methods and techniques.
Make use of time effectively and efficiently for important focused tasks.
Successful people have tremendous clarity about who they are, what they want, and how they are going to get it.
Awesome lessons for anyone to keep happy, healthy and wealthy!!
Day 28 Focal Point 17 February 2010 This is a very good primer for concentration and successful attitude from Brian Tracy. His Number One Rule is Be Responsible (response-able). From that we can see how the adoption of single-minded and single-handed habits of thought can revolutionize the time we spend into a more precise and productive process. Again we are prompted to change habits, like garments, and wrestle into the good ones as we slough out of the bad ones. Bad habits are easy to acquire…a bear to lose
Yes, yes..”.With the optimal vision of our goals at the forefront of our minds all day long, we begin to act and react automatically in a positive manner that channels into that river of flexibility between the banks of chaos and rigidity”. It is tough to start great habits, the poor ones are easier to start and stick to. So if we keep focused on our goals then we can more effectively (key word from Tom this morning) manoever between those banks. When I joined the gym last week, which I have done many times in the past, my motivation was to increase my self esteem and confidence. Likem I posted earlier, within 24 hours to new doors opened. Other times it was to look better.…and yes feel better, but I never really thought about it in terms of how it is realy really good for me aside form looking better. I am on the road to forming new good habits and I like it
I guess this all ties back to preserverence.…it’s gonna take some effort to make these habits stick
(Part two, y’all) I have always prided myself on my flexibility and planning before execution. I worked for people who did not see it that way, unless it suited their purposes in their times of panic. I always came through. Yet, when they watched me work and methodically plan a project, they’d accuse me of stalling. Once I set my plan into motion, it went effortlessly as long as I was not burdened with diversions. If I had been distracted during this time, I would come close to failing. If I did it my way, I cruised straight to the end and had no cleanup or mis-takes because I factored them in at the onset. My way and their way often did not mesh, because they could interject unknowns that put me to the test and validated their concerns. I no longer give a damn about “them”. “They” will eat my dust.
My AHA Moment…
“German philosopher Goethe once wrote, ‘Everything is hard before it is easy.’ You may need to exert tremendous discipline to develop new habits of thought and behavior. But once you have them firmly locked in, they enable you to accomplish vastly more, with less.”
I haven’t been on in a while, think I got a little overwhelmed with all of this new knowledge flowing through with me and wanting to change so many of my habits that haven’t done any good for me. I actually took some action though and found out what I really want to do and the best way to start out, for me, is to volunteer at an assisted living center. Now, all I have to do is make sure it is okay with my boss if I could cut my work week sheet and work longer days! = ) By taking this baby step it will move me towards what I want to do in life. Listening to others is great medication not only for them but for myself. It will be much more rewarding for me as well, but I know it won’t be easy as I see the people I have grown close to pass, but it is worth it and it will be easier to see clearer as I keep on my path and stay focused.
Hope all is well with everyone here at the PN tribe!! Now I must stay focused on my plan and get back to work to show my boss I can accomplish everything in a 4 day week!!!!! = )
Welcome back, LLou! We’re still kicking things around. Focus is indeed the answer to those of us who have suffered from a lack of it. I know I have finally come to terms with my career-astigmatism and am more clear with where I want to be in 3–5 years…hell, next year! I believe that, like you, the acquisition of good habits, although strenuous, will be my salvation. I’m already being blessed with optimal activities and positive responses. Getting more and more locked in daily! Best to you and your effort to serve more greatly. It is a very rewarding venture…helping others.
Yes it is good to see you back Lissy, and you know what? You will be able to accomplish all you need to in that 4 day work week. Inspired thoughts require inspired action, and that seems to be what you are taking. I’m sure you will find lots of love and inspiration in your volunteering.
(1) I’d never heard of Brian Tracy, but that whole Eat The Frog idea had me cracking up from the very start of the note. Love it.
Masterful, obvious wisdom: Everything is hard before it is easy. So why have I so often expected new things to be easy right from the beginning? Probably to give me an excuse to drop them when they get hard.
Zero-Based Thinking. This is another new Big Idea.
‘Is there anything I am doing right now that, knowing what I now know, I wouldn’t get into again if I were starting over today?’ Honestly and happily I can answer ‘No’, but it is a great question to keep in mind and revisit often.
“Flexibility means that you practice zero-based thinking continually.” Wow, I must be learning something. That is was I just wrote myself.
Great line, Brian — Imagine flexibility as the river that flows between the banks of chaos and rigidity.
Every minute of planning sames ten in execution – another new idea to me. I’m a so-so planner at best. If I really care about the outcome (vacation, script) I plan well. Most other things, not much planning.
Good Afternoon Everyone,
This was a good note and great responses. I did go to Brian Tracy’s you tube site, as mentioned by Tom, and wrote down 10 goals. Optimism is my main goal, which is appropriate for this note. I am a psychotherapist and worked at a soul sucking operation for years ( It made grown people cry). One therapist aptly described it as “There is no joy here.” I will not mention the place, but I became the victim with my own thoughts. I have quit that job and am working on rewiring my brain. Unfortunately, negative thoughts seem to ingrain themselves deeper into the brain, compared to positive ones. So that is why optimism is so important.
I am working on enjoying where I am at, and we have the goal of moving to where we want to. We have only been here 3 years, but I have been disappointed with the city. We have been fortunate enough to live all over the world and thought this was the best place to settle down. I am not appreciating my home and its natural beauty.
(2)
“Is this the highest and best use of my time?!?” Asking and answering that would bring the American workplace to a halt, at least as it functions today.
I knew it was better to be optimistic, but didn’t realize how much that impacted.
More fantastic ideas; Ask yourself, ‘Why aren’t I at my goal already?’ So short and simple but it unleashes so much.
This was a GREAT note. Sop many of Brian’s big ideas matched what I wrote down for habits I need to build. Just when I was wondering are there any new big ideas coming our way – the answer is YES.
focusing on tasks… i must now put away the papers i have scattered on the floor and then get to the gym… seize the moment ..
Amen Hallelujah; Amen Hallelujah; Amen Hallelujah; Amen Hallelujah; Amen Hallelujah; Amen Hallelujah;
I am responsible and in charge of my life, past present and future.
I am so grateful and so glad I decided to enter the contest; these last 27 days have been a fountain of learning and growth. Friends are visiting from out of town, good people, just like us, hard working all their life and we love them dearly. Since last time we were together,2 years ago, so much changes has taken place in our life, listening to their “blaming” talk, every so often I caught myself agreeing with the complaining and the blaming, and it is a continuous watch of my own thoughts as they speak. I know the time to talk to them and explain is not here yet, and I also know that they are noticing the change in us and their mind is going 100 miles an hour right now and soon they will ask questions. For now I am observing the process that is taking place in me. Just a few months ago I would have been judging and wanting to change them. Today, I ware an inner smile, I am happy and I love them and I think I love them more than I use too. Oh I love this so much more today…. Thank you!
New attitude and behavior to be acquired or improved.
1. Just observing behavior and attitude understanding that they have no impact in my choices.
2. Observing my own thoughts free of judgments.
3. Accepting the differences and understanding the differences, and the value they create
4. Being open and receptive to new ideas.
Yes indeed I like the mental process of growing. Observing plants how they carry on no matter what is happening around them. Totally uninfluenced by external activities they just do what they are supposed to do, growing and producing constant and continuous effort toward the goal. Everything exists to teach me something new every day.
Visualization and idealization. I know of the first word and I practice it all the time the second one is slightly foreign to me, especially when used with visualization. This is a new one for me I usually visualize a goal; I can picture the outcome of a project, very easily. Then I focus on the work needed in the moment knowing that each step is necessary to accomplish the goal. Continuously keeping the picture of the finish project during the process? I need to study that a little deeper. At this point I am able to visualize pretty well anything I want to see happen. For me I have difficulties visualizing in the distant future, 3 to 5 years, I think more in visualizing something and see it happen way sooner And I think this is what cause stress and frustration in my life. Allowing for time. I am the instant kind a guy, I like to see things happen rater quickly. Something to really ponder upon. Idealization, hey?
Remind me of a client that brought us a sophisticated piece of equipment for repair. This machine was very important to him, his business could not function without it and nothing was available to replace it. So I decide I was going to get to it and get it repair ASAP. He asked when will it be ready and was told it would take two days to repair he went into a rage. This is not acceptable, it has to be done sooner, I have to have it now. On and on. I patiently waited until he was done and explain that it takes time to rebuild the unit, he finally left and I went to work. Two hours later he was back swearing and cussing the whole world for what was happening. And again I explain all that I could and he went away again not happy at all. Once again he comes. Before he entered the shop the counter person called me and said “Bernard he is back”. So I went and again listen to him for a good 20 minutes when he was done I said “listen, I would rather work on your machine instead of talking to you every couple of hours, It’s you money, you spend it the way you want to, pay me to talk to you or pay me to repair your unit it’s up to you. The more you come and interfere the more it’s going to cost and the longer you will have to wait”. And I asked him to make the decision. I promised that I will call him as soon the work is done. He did agree and left us alone to get the job done. I guess I need to tell myself that it take time to accomplish anything some longer than others Yeah indeed I do.
I loved reading your comment today Bernard, especially the part about listening to your friends and realizing that now wasn’t the place or the time to try and instill some wisdom in them. It’s a very hard thing for me to do, to just let my friends and loved ones wallow around where they are, but I too have been working on letting everyone be the judge of where they need to be. Thanks for sharing
I think it’s never the time to judge or set myself as a “teacher” instead just sharing my experiences when the time is right. Last night we were playing card with our friends and at the end of the game he said” these card make me angry” I look at him and ask ” how so? perhaps you choose to get angry when the right card don’t turn up?” And to my amazement he agree and we discuss the process. It was great. Following our intuition usually bring forth great results.
Thank you for noticing those details.
Re: “Today, I ware an inner smile,” Nicely put Bernard! .….. an “Inner Smile” I like that!
Hi Peter
Yeah something I discover not long ago. Thanks for the support.
Great formula you’ve outlined.…I’m printing it out to reflect on how I can put it into practice in my life…nice encapsulation of some key themes from the PNs
I’ll be honest that I’ve never been a huge fan of Brian Tracy so I was looking forward to today’s note — happy to report that I enjoyed it! A few big ideas for me out of the book:
Everything is hard before it’s easy — this is so true in my experience and it’s why so many people give up on their dreams. For me, the harder it is, the more challengng it is and if I want something badly enough, I’ll go for it no matter how hard. Just need to apply this principle to my book!
Zero-Based Thinking — this is something I need to think about more. If I knew what I know now, would I have started my company? I’ve learned so much about the brain, thinking, creativity and innovation so for that reason I would do it all again. But I’ve not had the financial rewards I was expecting (yet!) for the amount of hard work I give to it so I’m not sure I would do it again. Interesting question and I’m going to ponder on it!
Single-Handling — I need to DO this more. I’m getting better but want to perfect this positive habit. When I do it though and I live in the moment, the results are amazing.
I’ve found the same thing with quite a few of the notes so far. One that stands out is Beckwith’s Spiritual Liberation. I tried to read it, skimmed it and thought that it wasn’t for me! Was I ever surprised with the notes I tell ya. I had jots and scribbles all over them. Those particular notes really made me think and started me on a new path of really taking action and applying, little by little, what I have learned.
There ARE a lot of thoughts from this book worth taking a stronger, deeper look at. I had mentioned in a note earlier that appreciation deserves merit. We can change tomorrow.…not today. Not only should we not dwell or complain about our past, shortcomings and poor choices, but we really have to appreciate all that has happened. If things in your business haven’t produced exactly what you had expected appreciate those results for showing you what you would rather see.
Appreciation, similar to gratification, is a key to abundance and attracting more of what we want. Appreciate what you do love about your business, while making even the smallest steps toward your goal. As you recieve even the smallest rewards, thank the universe for them to. Appreciate ALL the signs that the creator sends your way!
<chuckle> I believe I have had about every form of success in my life but the financial rewards of which you speak. That is next, my goal, clarified to a point of excruciating brilliance. Yes, I have had money, lots of it, and I went through it with supreme ease. I see where it has gone, nothing remains. Then, again, I am now completely free. The “Dream” can occupy my entire life and I can fully apply zero-based thinking. Doing it over? Heh heh…indeed I am. Knowing now what I know now. =)
Jayne, I probably was on the same tribe as you. When I first learnt about Brian Tracy, I looked at his website and was not very impressed. It seemed to me he was a guy successfully selling his “package” and not on the same “philosophical” league as other authors in PH (e.g., Deepak Chopra, Eckhart Tolle, Wayne Dyer). After reading today´s note, I could also report enjoyment. Specifically, I have taken home the concept of “zero-based thinking.”
Idealisation — As much as I would love to meditate daily, it is not a priority for me at the moment and so I don’t create the time in my day for it. I do want to start idealising more though so will create time for this.
What do you think? Wow this was a real eye-opener for me because when I read that I stopped to think about what I do think about and as much as I try not to think about what I don’t want, I do! Like when the mail fell onto the mat I was thinking (and hoping) that it wasn’t a bill to pay rather than it being a cheque I’ve received! Will start thinking more about what I want (Law of Attraction)
Optimism — I am guilty of the glass half-empty syndrome but am starting to think more glass half-full. And I’m filling it up each and every day!
Why aren’t I at my goal already — FEAR. Get over it Jayne!
How will I change my life when I’m financially independent? Big question, big answers on their way to me!
Well I for one needed this note as a reminder today to not complain or criticize…lol…perfect timing
“Is there anything you are doing right now that, knowing what you now know, you wouldn’t get into again if you were starting over today?” That’s a gret question. I never reallyu thought about it in that way, but that is definitely a question I need to satrt asking myself on a regular and consistent basis. Where I stand right now, there are definitely some things that I am doing that I wouldn’t have started right now knowing what I know.
“The first requisite of success is the ability to apply your physical and mental energies to one problem without growing weary.” I have to admit, that lately, I have been growing weary. I guess I’m in one of the down times for me, feeling a little overwhelmed, that the tasks I have set before myself are just out of reach. But this is the dark time just before the dawn, the almost there that is more like halfway there. I give myself permission to assimilate what I have been learning, to keep on with my meditations, to keep my gaze fixed firmly on my path, to take even smaller baby steps as long as I keep taking the steps, the sun will soon shine, and these new ways will become habits.
The sharpen your focus questions are good, journal worthy, lol. I feel that today is a good day for journaling, for taking a breather, for looking back and marveling over how far I have laready come instead of looking at how far I have to go, I choose to rest and reassess myself and the path I am on rather than sliding back down the hills I have been climbing. It’s completely necessary for me at times, and it really gives me a brand new perspective, the abillity to look around at the new scenary and marvel at how beautiful it all is.
Happy hump day peeps.
Today is a nice day indeed. Just as there has to be seeds sown before we can reep the harvest so to must we take time to plant the seeds. Just because we can’t see the fully actualized plant doesn’t mean that things aren’t hppeneing on the inside. There is a plant inside every seed. Persist and perservere knowing that the universe is calling on you to be the best you possible. It’s easy to grow weary. I am still working on task commitment for years and it is something that I have been very hard on myself about. Instaed of getting to the root of the matter I became judegmental and figured I was just abnormal. Now I realize that my lack of commitment really came from poor self esteem and lack of confidense in my true ability to be a cocreator in my own life. Now that I have seen even small examples of how the universe will deliver what we focus on.I am doing more to increase my confidence and ability to produce the results that are part of my destiny. Part of learning and growth definitely involves analyzing and evaluating where we are now, where we have been and where we want to go. I hope you enjoyed your down time today and recieved some valuable insights along the way
I’ve been so honest in these posts that it’s taken me a long way from my comfort zones. I fear that looking back, I’ll regret sharing so much of my inner thoughts and worry about how it might come back to ‘haunt’ me one day. But hey, I figured that this was the only way that I wuld learn what I need to learn from this challenge so I’ve thrown myself into it 150% and what will be will be. I accept things as they are!
Hi Jayne
I’ve had similar thoughts. My husband was a very private man, and he always accused me of revealing too much of myself to people. I on the other hand, have always felt the need to share my experience with a few others. Mainly because I just needed someone to say that I was ok, and I would get through my current challenge.
From the very beginning of this challenge, I felt accepted and supported, and so found it very easy to share my story. But there are times when I hear my husbands accusations, and I keep asking myself, should I really have said that. It makes us feel vulnerable to be so open, but then if we are being honest, and we’re striving to grow as a result, maybe it’s worth it.
Thanks to you too, Maxine. Your story is especially inspiring. I appreciate how you’ve contributed to helping us all grow. Thanks! ~ Tom
It is definitely is worth it! I personally wear my heart on my sleeve and I always have. Sometimes I felt very different because of it. My ex-husband was extremely controling and monitered everything he ever caught me saying, from telephone converstaions to comments on tv shows. No matter what he did.…my voice kept getting stronger and stronger. Eventually I started listening to other parts of that voice and have made many positive changes since that relationship. Slowly I started to embrace that open and honest part of myself. The more you express yourself the more you empower others around you to do the same. Follow your gut and listen to your voice.…the more you listen the stronger that beautful voice starts to sing.…you’ve got words to your own song, Maxine. Don’t let anyone ever tell you different. You have been one member that I constantly enjoy reading. Your honesty is empowering for m,e and, I am sure, for other as well. Keep shining!
While we are meant to be “independent of the good and bad opinion of others”, it is nice to know that you enjoy reading my comments. Thanks
Maxine
its worth it!
thanks to you all for your truthful inspiration… it has allowed me to do the same in a safe place (PN ) like ours..
Jayne, thanks for being willing to share your experiences. We all get to learn from your authenticity, that we’re not alone in having these feelings, doubts, and dreams. This encourages all to share and grow, and brings in the tide for all our ships. I appreciate your contributions toward making this a richer experience for me. Thank you! ~ Tom
I think it’s great that you are geing so open. I think the more open we all are about sharing and learning from each other the more trust develops between everyone. I know a few weeks back I was kind of in a slump. I love the notes but felt that I needed direction that I so truly lacked. One night I was tired one and felt that I just had to comment. I let it all out.…and then felt uneasy about being so open.….almost vulnerable. Like journaling, these posts are a great place to start placing our thoughts and goals on paper without fear of judgement…kind of like a virtual support group for wisdom junkies or anyone who desires to make posotive changes in their life. i really think it’s great that you posted this comment. I am sure you will have lot of members giving you a high five and a very big hug (including me
Honesty begets honesty, Jayne. Russell Simmons said, in the notes about the Karma of Economics, “The science is simple:When you give the world love and respect, the world will give you love and respect back.” I may have suffered a lot in my life from my honesty. I wouldn’t have it any other way (well, the suffering kinda sucks). One man, one life, one story. It’s in keeping with single-handedly living my life. It will be that way as I attain my goal. Don’t change.
Jayne, I am glad that you share so much of yourself with all of us here. Sometimes when what I feel like sharing isn’t over the top or positive (like todays post) I too become concerned that I am sharing too much, But honestly, I think that it is all of us, sharing with each other, that really helps us all move on forward and to be open to new ways of looking at the same thing. Good job, and remember to breathe!
Jayne, during this challenge I have read most of the notes and the posts but have very timidly written comments or replies. Today you inspired me! In addition to a comment and have already replied twice to your comments. Thank you for “been so honest.” Please continue!
“I fear that looking back, I’ll regret sharing so much of my inner thoughts and worry about how it might come back to ‘haunt’ me one day.”
Then don’t look back.
Hi! My “Take Away” from the “Focal Point” PhilosophersNote is the
“Zero Based Thinking” strategy .… Responsible thinking is really important. Tough questions and tough answers .…. Kind of cuts right to the core of things .…
“So, how about it? “Is there anything you are doing right now that, knowing what you now know, you wouldn’t get into again if you were starting over today?”
Ponder that one and then “If your answer is ‘yes,’ then your next question is, ‘How do I get out of this situation, and how fast?’”
I also liked the “Sharpen Your Focus” Strategy .…. again … cuts to the core!
It can be very difficult to become the change you would like to see in the world.
But the moment you show the world a reflection of its Higher-self,
it will inform you “Your wish is my command!”
I love the metaphor of comparing using our energy to a rocket trying to get beyond the force of gravity. A huge percentage of my energy is spent on the first few minutes of my task (including planning) and then I can take off. It happened today. I woke up early and put a lot of intense energy into my plan for a new short play I had an idea for. By 6:30 the foundation was settled and then I just took off. The characters came alive and it was almost as if the thing wrote itself. By 10:00 I had written ten pages and typed “END,”
I read another book from Brian Tracy, “Eat the Frog!”. Brian Tracy collects some common sense advices and put them in very readable format. I found them very handy and practical. From this note it looks that “Focal Point” contains mayn good advices, too.
I found the following big ideas for me:
“Zero-Based Thinking” Asking the right question is 1000 times better than having the right answer. And the zero-based thinking looks like one type of right questions.
“Flexibility: The single most important Quality” Playing and moving between the walls of rigidity and chaos.
“Everything is hard before it’s easy.” I think that it’s better so. If I get something very easy, I don’t appreciate it so much. On the other hand it make me chose only things that I value the most.
“How’s your optimism?” Optimism is for me just a learned response to stimuli from the world, such that I asked myself what good can it mean to me. And here it’s also valid that at first it was hard. And now it’s a little easier.
“The great truths of life are simple.” It may be simple but they are not easy for me. At least not at beginning.
As I quickly mentioned on a quick reply to Jane, I enjoyed the note much more than I expected (I certainly judged this book by the cover, in this case Tracy’s website). There are several powerful and interesting ideas in this note. The point that made me thing was one of the sidebar quotes “If you had all the time and money you wanted and you could be or have anything at all in life, waht would you really want? The greater clarity you can achieve in describing your ideal future, the more likely you are to create that future for yourself, and usually faster than you can imagine right now. However, you can’t hit a target you can’t see. Clarity is essential.” As Brian says: “Amen”
After reading the note, I have applied the “single-mindedly one touching” idea and I have figured out that the most valuable use of my time in this moment is to answer the aforementioned question posed by Tracy. And.… I am really enjoying the first version of it!
Nothing to do with this note (well everything has something to do with everything else) here is an amazing article I wanted to share. A profile on Roger Ebert. I’m sure there could be a PN or two based on his journal.

Wow! So today, I woke up with my gremlins on parade. They started out sort of quietly rumbling in the background, barely audible behind the gurgling of the coffee pot and electric toothbrush but rest assured they were there planning their attack. Before I knew it, they were storming the walls and soon had hijacked my morning leaving me bound and gagged in a chair in the corner. I was surprised and angry (I had a really cool morning planned after all). I felt like I’d been hit by a stun gun of unproductive small thinking and doubt. But it turned out there was something those pesky gremlins hadn’t planned on … I had been sharpening my saw for weeks now and because of that, I had a really strong resolve to use every moment as a moment to practice. Oh sure, I succumbed to their surprise attack for a bit but it turns out resolve is a mighty force. So this morning, tapping into that reservoir of resolve, I pulled our four practices and each one is adding steam to my engine: 1) welcome everything (yes, even gremlins. “Hi guys, care for some coffee?”) 2) Be responsible. (“I am responsible for everything I am and everything I will become.” Repeat 14 million times today.) 3) The best way to influence emotions is to DO SOMETHING. (“Write your PN post, John. And don’t stop until it is complete.”) 4) Connect with community. (As soon as I went out and read some of the exchanges from yesterday, whammo! There was my mojo). Yes indeed, today is a good day to practice.
John that’s fabulous! You have such a creative way with words and it’s so inspiring to read your posts. It’s funny isn’t it that despite our best efforts, the gremlins still dare to make an appearance!! Of course they do so for a reason.…to test us and challenge our resolve to be who we know we can be! Thse pesky little gremlins will rear their ugly little heads again and again but eventually, the life blood will have been sucked out of them and they won’t have any power over our thoughts!
“Use the force John”!!
I’m grabbing my lightsaber now … thanks, Jayne. You know, here’s what I really noticed this morning and it’s a big idea from our Buddhist friends, “start where you are.” This morning, I really was feeling stymied by my inner world and I kept trying to bypass it. It was when I started with the state of my inner world (and got creative about it with my writing), not trying to deny it, that things started to shift. Whew … now I can get on with my day.
Hi John
I subscribe to another website, Flylady.net which is all about loving yourself and getting your home in order. One of her mottos is “You are not behind, jump in where you are” It is such a powerful idea, like your “Start where you are”. There is no point beating yourself up for where you are, just jump/start where you are, and then you’ll be in a different place.
Maxine! I’m stealing that one … “you’re not behind. Jump in where you are.” LOVE IT! Talk about a way to reclaim a moment. Thank you
That is really good, Maxine.
Jayne, didn’t you know them gremlins is heaven-sent? Russell Simmons told us that already. Actually, if the going weren’t rough we wouldn’t learn a thing, would we? I recall Nietzsche’s assessment of the li’l demons, “Be careful when you cast out your demons that you don’t throw away the best of yourself.”
what a great quote Mark, be careful, don’t throw away your best.…lol…love it and thanks for sharing
john thats great.… i understand as i have not gotten to answer some of my replies last nite that meant so much to me… im off to do that after this..
i love your our practices..and yes, today is a good day!
p.s. jayne is right you have a sparkle to your words.
Thank you for your compliment. Enjoy the love fest for you from yesterday’s post.
i did and still am thanks.. i like the attention
as an aside you really do add great wisdom and laughter to our chats… thanks john
It’s nice to have you back John. You always bring a smile to my face withe the way you word your comments
Today, your post was especially inspiring to me for it seems that I too woke up to gremlins, and I wasn’t welcoming them at all. Thanks to you, I have decided that they need some cake to go with that coffee, and that we should all take a walk to the park
Thanks so much for being a part of this wonderful PN tribe
Ah shucks, thanks. It’s fun, yes? Thanks for hangin with me
“gremlins on parade” .…. Hi guys, care for some coffee?” .… Lol … Cool!
Enjoyed reading your post!
Hey John!
…so glad the ‘gremlins’ are out of your computer, too, and that you’re back with us. You were missed… your thoughts and words have an extra little swing in the ‘dance of life’! Yes! Today is a good day to practice!
Cheerio
Thanks, Snoop!
Heh heh, John. Great intro to the day. My gremlins were trying to pull the covers over my head but the cat helped attack them and I was up and running (she wanted fed). Wake, meditate, caffeinate and ruminate. Then postulate and regurgitate. What a process!
Something that’s been mentioned but not fully expanded upon here is breathing. I know it’s autonomic, but I still find myself breathing shallowly or sometimes holding it for reasons I would rather not have at all. Now I’ve begun a conscious effort to remember to breathe deeply throughout the day…not hyperventilating as I think I may, at times. Got any recommendations along that line?
I’ve been hankering for a cat lately … perhaps I’ve found a new reason: gremlin hunter. I don’t have mice but gremlins … they seem to be running rampant some days. Love your question on the breath and I am torn. Part of me wants to allow the breath to breathe itself and simply to notice where it is in any moment. The thinking (for me) is that by placing my attention on it, it will expand and deepen on it’s own. That said, as I am writing this response, I’ve been consciously breathing deeper. It’s felt expanding and grounding. Hmm … I think I’ll experiment and get back to you.
Nice approach! And I guess we all have gremlins to accept. Well I must say the gremlins atleast left you with some entertaining and insightful tidbits for the rest of us. Did I hear you write some notes ago that you were putting this all in a book? Sounds like maybe you should. Would it ever be an interesting read.…hmmm.…what could you title it?
My rules are summed up with FAITH. FIRST find out what you really want, APPRECIATE all you have, INTEND it to be, TAKE action and finally HAVE faith that the universe will deliver. It started with a spiritual group that I will be hosting for the first time this weekend (butterflies abounding now). I am going to revolve it around the power of intention and some of Lynne McTaggart’s work. I belong to an online intention group called the Intention project and I am going to use this acronym and the group as the focus of my week and the meeting.…wish me luck!
Best of luck, AMPowers!
I am sending you all kinds of great, luscious, delicious vibes.
I wish I was there to benefit! Wait, I am here — I get to benefit every day from you.
Hey there, I’ve been away from PN but just needed to comment on your post from 2 weeks (!) ago. Those darn gremlins! Same here some days, but PN has defenitely helped me too in saying hello to them and keep doing something. I have the negative habit of becoming “frozen” when things go awry, I think “I should’ve, could’ve…”. PN has helped me to keep going!
Some time ago I read Brian Tracy’s challenge to “Double Your Income”.
At that time I was in sales. I recognized that since my income depended on my efforts, I really could double my income. Within six months by working smarter and following Brian’s principles I raised my income from $30,000 to over $60,000 per year. When I realized my success I was thrilled!
I still have the graphs that I made of my daily sales. Brian Tracey’s seminars, his books and his newsletters have been my inspiration. My old comfort zone, however, had a great gravitational pull on me and for a while I fell back toward my former income level.
The Space Shuttle analogy is fine only until you achieve orbit . If you don’t achieve your orbital velocity, you will begin to fall back. In every endeavor, Consistent action is necessary to reach orbit, to reach critical mass, to get to the tipping point or any of the positions that are relatively stable. Then you can pause a moment to assess your situation.
Unless you’re content to be a brief, brilliant starburst you must continue your successful push. This will establish your new comfort zone.
One of my goals it to move, but in the mean time, why can’t I be happy where I am at and notice the opportunites here? We are only 1 hour from where I want to live, which gives me the opportunity to explore the area and start forming relationships with groups and people there.
I plan on journaling, meditating and visulazing. I have used these tools in the past, but moved away from them at that job, no more excuses and blaming!
My biggest take away has to be Zero-Based thinking. I never really thought to approach my life like this, and it make perfect sense. Identify, ask myself would I be doing this again if I started over knowing what I know now, and if yes devise a way to stop doing it. It’s so simple, and makes perfect sense.

Totally needed this note!!
Time management is a huge issue for me! It goes hand in hand with managing my personal energy (which I mentioned in another note). I needed to hear every single point of this note, especially since I constantly get myself in situations where I am time crunched (like right now!) Usually when I am in these situations I am so hard on myself, repeatedly asking how can I get myself in the same situation. This usually leads to not so nice answers and it really creates stress in my life. Well I am in the situation again but this time my mindset and how I am handling it are very different.
For one, I am not asking the same old question. Rather I am asking “What can I learn from this and how can I apply it so that I am not in this situation again”. By just asking that question I am one taking responsibility for my actions and two finding ways to better manage my time.

Another thing, instead of giving in to that I give up feeling I am pullling through and doing what I need to do to get myself out. I feel that I am building strength of character and living more in integrity b/c I am not blaming anyone and I am not looking for a quick out. This is all about me! The zero based thinking along with the Tony Robbins’ what questions are you asking yourself are helping me BIG time here!
What I need to practice more of in my time management is the single handling concept and planning! I need to see things through which is something I frequently don’t do. This made me realize how I settle in other areas of my life and well I need to to see those through to what I really want. And the planning! I am fanatic about jotting down every appointment, event I attend, etc. but then that’s it! I always find myself at the last minute scrambling to rearrange work stuff to make my appointments or buying a gift for a party.

Jotting down the date and jotting down a reminder a week before will help me a lot. Also I need to make a habit of looking ahead rather than the day of. That will save me so much stress and time! I feel like I won lotto with this info! YEAH!!!
Another thing, I need to honor my own time committments, For example, I also say that I am going to go to bed at a certain time (like tonite it was 11pm). Well I never follow through and always end up doing other stuff (like now it’s 12am and I am posting this). I have been like this since I was a child. I don’t sleep at night much but it is so important that I do because I know it will help with me creating more balance in my energy.
A book on time management that I highly recommend (and that i need to read again) is “It’s Hard to Make a Difference When You Can’t Find Your Keys” by Marilyn Paul. Her perspecitve on time is unlike anything I’ve come across and when I first read it I really took to heart her suggestions. Of course life got busy and well everything went out the window. Def reading her book this weekend!
The questions at the end of the note totally blew my mind!! Wow!! We should all regularly ponder the questions and our responses.

Again, fab note and really needed it. So grateful for this new insight and hope on my time management skills!
Ok off to bed for real!
Focus — eliminate the what-ifs and if-onlys (and for me the “could-bes).…and get to working on what you really want.
Somewhat not surprising given the book title but interesting the number of times clarity / focus come up. I’m reminded of a quote (I forget who said it) that “you can do anything you want, but you can’t do everything you want.”
I also like the idea of optimism as the primary predictor of your future. I’ve been focused on a theme of 2010 is going to be a great year — happy with how it is going so far.
Brian Tracy has been the leader in personal growth for over 30 years, I enjoyed reading his book focal point several years ago and felt the most important lesson I learned was that of taking full responsibility for every aspect of our lives. This cannot be minimized or discounted we are the only ones responsible for our outcomes and must fix that responsibility to ourselves. Brian Tracy says it is absolutely essential to accept complete responsibility for yourself, your life, your results, with no excuses. Additionally I love the idea that every minute counts so we must use your time wisely and effectively, Time management is life management.. This is great stuff, and Brian Tracy is truly who develop
This is a great one from Brian Tracy.“Simplify your life, double your productivity, and achieve all your goals.” This is so important, if you do not keep things simple(or for me at least) you will find yourself doing far too many things and in most cases if they all do get done they are done poorly. The power of focus will double or triple your productivity. Do what you do best and achieve your goals. Delegate what you do poorly and is not productive for you to some one else.
If I had more time, I’d say it in fewer words. Most powerful idea from Focal Point : “You are where you are and what you are, because of yourself and nothing else. Nature is neutral, it doesn’t care. If you find out what others, who are now getting the effects that you desire, are doing, and you do the same things, you’ll get the same results and rewards. And, if you don’t, you won’t!
More FOCUS, CLARITY, TIME MANAGEMENT!!!!!! OK OK I GET IT!!!!
))
I Value MYSELF and I VALUE MY TIME!! therefore I am willing to implement my organisational skills!!
I am willing to find the middle between rigid & chaos, I AM CENTERED :=)
and when I lose it, if I do, I IDEALIZE and STAY FOCUSED on WHAT I WANT & ONLY WHAT I WANT
Focal Point
Brian Tracy
“You can dramatically improve the overall quality of your life far faster than you might think possible. All you need is the desire to change, the decision to take action, the discipline to practice the new behaviors you have chosen, and the determination to persist until you get the results you want.“
Be responsible pro-active not reactive
Be a creator not a victim
Be Flexible — find the flow — stay open.
Big IDEA — IDEALIZATION

Successful people have tremendous clarity about
who they are, what they want, and how they are going to get it. Unsuccessful people usually
are unsure and confused about who they are, what they want, and where they are going.
Maslow says the same thing about psychologically healthy/successful people having clarity. He
says that whereas the average individuals “often have not the slightest idea of what they are, of
what they want, of what their own opinions are,” self-actualizing individuals have “superior
awareness of their own impulses, desires, opinions, and subjective reactions in general.”
Successful people think about what they want and
how to get it most of the time. As a result of this mental focus, they accomplish much more than
the average person, even though they may have started with no particular advantages.
Unsuccessful people, on the other hand, tend to think and talk about what they don’t want
most of the time. They think and talk about who they are mad at and who is to blame for their
problems most of the time. They don’t understand why their lives don’t improve even though
they have been working as long as others. They slip into the habit of thinking and talking even
more about their problems and who is to blame, thereby making the situation worse.”
Know thyself — have vision — be disciplined — make it happen.
This was an interesting note -

One needs to learn about goal setting from the Olympic gold medalist rower– Sir Mathew Pinset.
At the IMP OWP 2010 Pinsent will share his experience from four Olympic campaigns, which resulted in four gold medals. He will highlight the importance of goal setting, communication, trust and ultimately the courage it takes to win in the toughest of conditions.
