Neuro-Linguistic Programing — It’s Really Not As Scary As It Sounds

NLPI found this really cool exercise on NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming) the other day.  It’s a step by step guide to help you create a belief that will open your life up to more options and opportunity.

This is a pretty basic guide and there’s a lot more to NLP, but have a look.  It’s also a great way to meditate and break the bonds of negative thinking.

It’s really hard to find good exercises like this one and the search can be somewhat tedious.  After hours of research, you may find that you have to pay a huge sum for a certain NLP course.

So for those who are intereseted in changing their minds through NLP, I found this course developed by Burt Goldman of the American Monk.  It’s called Enlightened NLP and involves auditory, visual, and kinesthetic modeling to reprogram your mind.  This course is a completely comprehensive as Burt has spent years collecting the best and most powerful exercises on NLP.

Otherwise, check out this NLP exercise below.  It’s a bit simplistic but I find it’s a good way to let go and re-energize as well.

Recreating Your Beliefs With NLP

Step 1:

First, think about something you firmly believe in.

It doesn’t have to be something significant — in fact, something as simple as the belief that you can walk is great. As long as it’s undeniable, you’re good.

Now as you think about this undeniable belief, notice where it appears as you visualize it inside your mind.

Realize where it actually positions itself in the space of your visualization.

Is it to the left, to the right, close to you or far away from you?

Are you aware of any voices in your mind which tells you it is an undeniable belief?

Naturally make a mental note of these things (called submodalities).

Once you’re done, allow yourself to think about something completely different for a moment — it could be anything that can help you empty your thoughts.

Something which can let you return to your neutral state of mind.

Step 2:

Now think of something you’re unsure of.

You can choose something you don’t really care about like what Peter or Jane (yes even if you don’t know any Peters or Janes in your life) has had for breakfast this morning.

Next, realize where this thought is positioned inside your visualization.

Once again, notice whether it’s to the left, right, close to you or far away from you once again.

Make a mental note about your observations (remember submodalities?).

Step 3:

By now, you have two different submodalities for when you firmly believe in something and when you don’t.

To continue, shift your awareness to the belief you wish to shape and notice where it’s positioned within your visualization.

When you’ve done that, move this image within your mind into the submodalities where you ‘firmly believe’ something and where you ‘don’t care/are unsure of’ as you’ve made a mental note of in the previous steps.

If there are internal voices in your previous attempts, repeat them as well when you place this image into the different positions with these two submodalities.

At this point, the problems you may face are:

  1. The image in your mind will not move left to right, closer or further way and vice versa.
  2. To solve this, all you have to do is center the image, imagine it shooting far into the distance and then quickly pull it back towards the direction you want it to be.
  3. The image in your mind keeps moving back into its original position.

In this case, you can:

  • Create a sound in your head as you ‘swish’ it into its new position
  • Nail it multiple times in its place
  • Imagine a super-magnet behind this image and stick it on pure metal
  • Chain it in the position you want it to stay with multiple locks
  • Use your kick-ass imagination to think of any other ways to keep the image where you want it to be

Once you’ve got it in place — just make sure this new image has the same size as the one which you want to model it after!

I tried this. First I visualized, I’m a mother, the idea settled on the right very close. Then I visualized the question, What is Putin having for dinner. Again, right side very close.

Then I thought, “I weigh 65 kilos. Straight to left side close. I tried and tried to get it to the right. I need more work.

    Hi!

With this technique you presented I understood a lot of things that I was studying for a while!! I’m reading an Anthony Robbins’s book entitled Unlimited Power (very famous)… in this book there is a similar technique and I didn’t understand how to use it until now with your explanation!!!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! I WILL TRY IT OUT!!!

P.S — Sorry about my english I’m Brazilian and a better reader than writer…

Wow this is one of the coolest exercises I’ve done so far. It was quite insightful because I figured out an unsure belief is felt more in the chest + stomach area, and a firm belief actually sits at the top of my head. That was surprising because I always thought a feeling of firm belief would come from the heart. Guess it’s more about intellectual “knowing.”

    Keep them coming :-)

I performed this exercise 2 years ago and after this lesson I really get it. I’m ready to reap the rewards of my new truth of who I am. I intend to make many more changes using this technique; however, I would like to know if I need to repeat or visit the new truths on a regular basis.

Sounds a lot to do on paper but it is very simple. In NLP circles it is known as the “Swish technique.” Also used for getting rid of bad habits as well.
