Are you an undercover coach?
Thousands of people are coaching others without necessarily being aware of it. And they’re not being paid for it. (I’m talking about life coaching, business coaching, relationship coaching, career coaching and financial coaching)
In this short 6 minute video I’ll give you three things:
- A one minute test to find out if you’re an undercover coach.
- The #1 strategy to launch you into coaching, which takes 30 minutes and costs $10
- A gift — a valuable tool you can use with your very first coaching client.
Editors Note: David Wood leads an online community of 70,000 coaches in 90 countries. He’s a member of the Transformational Leadership Council founded by Jack Canfield.
Could you be missing out on an easy, natural revenue stream, and the chance to impact even more lives? Particularly in these challenging economic times, it’s worth finding out.
Once you’ve watched the video, I’d love to see your comment posted below with answers to these two questions:
- What was your score out of 7 in the test?
- What’s your #1 question about becoming a coach? I’ll reply to every single one.
Thanks for changing the world, one person at a time….

I got 3, and 2 May be. But i realize my daily job is to mentor if not coach the people in my company. I look forward to improvising on that.
cheers
Yes i am a coach with 6 qualities, but the most attracive and striking factor which motivates me to PRINT A BUSINESS CARD. when i finish my card i dont take initiative to print it again.
I am a student mentor cum counselor having 300 students.
I love the way to explain the content, short and very crisp , great and good sir.
Good Luck
I got 6 out of 7 — would have made 7 if being a Mom and volunteer coach for landmarkeducation counted.
SuzieQ
I scored 5/7.
My score was 6 out of 7. I have always been there helping people for as long as I can remember. Although, there are times when dealing with my own life that I don’t feel I should charge for helping. I am always going through self help material and practices to try to become a better human being. I have been told by friends that I should become a professional. Never thought of it that way though.
I am a bookkeeper/secretary for a small aggregate company. So my question is how to chose the rate at which you charge for the services?
Many Thanks and blessings

WOW — 7 of 7 — knew I was heading into coaching, just didn’t realize how easy it would be to step into it.…
THANK YOU!!

I do some public speaking, and coach & teach within my profession, but I am not paid extra for my coaching. I have also been on a personal growth journey for quite some time. Not quite sure how to parlay the coaching part into a source of income, as well. I am known & respected in my industry in my community. I’d appreciate your insights.
6/7 and that’s only because I’ve put my limited income into my family and found other ways to access those self-help resoureces. If I counted up all the self-help stuff i’ve accessed and read, it’d definately be thousands! But I’ve done a lot of “ten-day free” trials and free downloads like this one, and having friends share their books and programs with me, so I can take that information and take it further out into the world.
However, this video SO describes me!!! LOL — I had even printed out the business cards, I carry them in my purse.
#1 Question — How do I keep from sabotaging myself? I coach *everyone* I meet naturally (no, seriously,) but I’m terrified of doing it as a business, the charging and billing of clients scares me — I’m afraid people are not going to want to pay for what they can get for free just talking to friends. How do I control that fear and find confidence in my skills? Thanks in advance…
I got 7/7 — I do coach people for a living but it was an interesting video and questions because all of the questions you asked — I have always done — before I ever did coach and train for a living.
I have a card but I think I will get another one — that just has my name on it and email address and phone number. It would be very easy to give out and may be less intimidating than our business card.
Thanks for the advise and encouragement.

Dear David Wood
Namaste!
I am not sure if you would believe me or not, I have done all the seven things you mentioned though not everything is very often. 6 of them are very regular. Showing different perspective is the one I have done not so often.
Thank you

Well I’m a bit late in watching this, but I got 6 out of 7. I was a computer programmer by trade. But am learning hypnosis and I am pretty good at motivating people.
Love the idea about business card printing. I’ve got a good laser printer here at home, so I’ll start off with my own.
Question: What to charge? Around here (Las Vegas) things are very tight.
Thanks and be good.

Dear David,
First off, you are adorable and I loved that you introduced your cat!
I am redefining my career goals. I just today qualified as a handler and my dog as a therapy dog to get certification to do therapy with the Good Dog Foundation.
I am a psychotherapist LCSW(20yrs), my private practice has been on hold now, seeing old patients once in a while, for 7 years. Once my son started school I have been running school events.
I am involved with the ADHD organizations and am looking to work with that population’s needs. I would like to do one on one, group, and motivational/workshop speaking. I have done that before and I was successful with an EAP doing workshops. All of it outside the paperwork required by insurance. companies!
Question: Doesn’t it seem natural that adorable, wonderful you organize a coaching network so those you inspire can maintain contact and be part of a group? Then you can hire me to assist you giving professional advise and positive motivation.
Sincerely Yours,
Janet Rothstein

I got 6 on the quiz. How do you decide how much to charge?
7/7 David, with a floodgate of tears following.
It’s very natural for me. I recently had a (male) “speaker/mentor/trainer” shed tears in front of me.
Interesting …
There is a miss for me somewhere. I spend thousands on personal growth and development. A lot of mind-frick going on in this pretty little head of mine.
Q — What’s the question to ask when you don’t know the question to ask?
6 out of 7 …
Thank you David Wood for the gentle nudge I needed to clarify my own vision … I’ll be ordering my business cards after I write you.
I have visualized myself as a Life Coach for the past couple of years. I have already named my brand, secured my URL, visualized myself on a stage speaking to a large group, holding workshops, and doing PSA’s in my community to bring about awareness, guidance, and healing to a subject I’m absolutely passionate and personally acquainted with. I have been on the most beautifully liberating and sometimes painful journey of my life and believe this is the area that I could change the world one person at a time. I have learned things that are screaming to be heard by the general public for a much better quality of life. My thought is … If I can do this, so can you. Here’s how…
I now know that God has gifted me with a powerful voice and the ability to influence others in a positive way. I’m absolutely passionate about sharing my own story, inspiring others and giving direction to those who desire to change their lives in ways they never thought possible.
After all, it’s never to late to turn your life around …

Hi David, 7/7 , it’s alway’s the simple things
I got 7 out of 7.
I have developed a curriculum that has made life changing for many clients, but I somehow lost my way when I lost several Million $ in cash and real estate over the last year and a half, and I have been floundering since…
I would like to get back into coaching…
But feel confused, and not sure which direction to go.
I had 6 out of 7.
My number one question about coaching is what qualities, attributes, values, skills make for a top performing coach vs. an average coach?
Thanks!
Hello David,
My number is 7.
For that I say ‘thank you’ to you, David. Five years ago, when I started planning my retirement, I chose lifecoaching after I asked myself a lot of questions, yours including. When My chosice was made, I turned for help to make it a reality. You were one of those who inspired me and provided with first coaching tools. Thank you.
During the five years that I kept working I continued learning and applying my newly acquired skills to serve people through coaching. I retired this year and I am glad to say I have skills to help people and through them make the world a happier place, one person at a time.
Thank you!

I got 7 out of 7 that is aweosme
Thank you for being a sharing person.….….……without realizing it I have come to understand that indeed I have been a ‘life coach’ on some level, always listeneing and encouraging friends and strangers alike to step out in faith and to persue thier dreams and desires. To me it just seems to come naturally and I Love it!!!! Like so many of the other respondants I have no clue or idea how or what to charge, I am a Reiki Master and Healing Hands Therapist and even so I have simply asked for a ‘love offering’, (not very often gratifying $ ) but.….….….. would love to be more professional in accepting clients, would you suggest that I state my rates and be clear about the “time factor” up front as so often time just gets away from me and I end up with earning about 7cents an hour . lol. I thank you for your encouragement, and your generousity.….….….….….…..Sincerely, Kath
6 out of 7!
My number one question is — I don’t have the money for an office so can I still do it?
Very interesting. I scored 7. I have been a teacher, a tutor, a minister, a sponsor. Today alone, two people have called me for guidance.
Question: How do I get comfortable charging for what I’ve always given away?
Question: What role do you play in my onging success?
Question: What’s in it for you?
You’ve gotten my wheels to turn.
I scored6/7. I have spent some money on self improvement, but not the amount you mentioned, I hope! I am a teacher, tutor, youth group leader and currently working four part time jobs to try to make up for not having a current full-time job. The idea of making money doing what comes naturally to me is a new one. However, I just recently took your test to see if I am ready for a life coach and the answer came back yes. But when I tried to answer the questions in your first session, I was unable to give an answer. Can I still be a life coach for others? I know I often give advice even though my own life is in chaos.
Wonderful video, thank you!
I got 5 out of 7
Well, 6 if you count what I’m studying and the sort of volunteer work I’ve tended towards for the 6th trait.
My number one question: I’m in my mid 20s. What are some of the advantages to being/having a relatively young coach? Are there any techniques that are particularly helpful for attracting clients in that sort of situation?
Thanks again for the fantastic video and the advice on the business cards
I got 7 out of 7! Of course, as a college professor, am I not already getting paid as a coach to my students ( I am a choral conductor/conducting teacher). How is it possible to generate more income on top of that? What would be the charge? How can I set it up?
Thanks for the help! Have a great day.
7 out of 7 A huge surprise. I never thought of it as coaching. I guess my question would be, ” since I have been doing many of these things since high school and I’m 71 years young, how do I transform from “friend helping friend” to “paid coach to friend”. Perhaps it is too late to change.
Hi:
Great video and very inspiring. Really made me take stock of who and what I am.
1. Answer 7/7
2. Credibility and credentials — don’t people expect you to have credentials? Or perhaps I should say I feel I need credentials to charge for this service. How do you go from free advice, guidance and coaching to paid advice, guidiance and coaching?
7/7… wow… I didn’t even realize this. The funnier thing is that not a lot of other people realized that coaching was what I was doing either.
