Your attention span is fickle. It skips from one thing to another without your permission. There’s a reason why they coined the phrase, “capture your attention.”
So how do you “capture your attention”? Well, if you practice meditation then you’re already on the right path. If not, it’s never too late.
Countless scientific studies have proven the benefits of meditation, including stress relief, an increase in happiness, and an improvement in health. And now it’s been proven to help you concentrate better. Just think, you’ll be able to slip into that deep focus you’ve always dreamed about and stay in a flow so intense, you’ll be more productive than two rabbits in spring.A study conducted with 76 Tibetan Buddhist monks revealed a startling discovery. As did another experiment involving 17 non-meditators put into an 8 week training course.
I definitely suggest giving this article a read. It gives a good description of the experiments that took place as well as how you can begin meditating to fine-tune your focus.
How Meditation Improves Attention
William James wrote that controlling attention is at “the very root of judgment, character and will”. He also noted that controlling attention is much easier said than done. This is unfortunate because almost every impressive human achievement is, at heart, a feat of attention. Art, science, technology — you name it — someone, somewhere had to concentrate, and concentrate hard.
Wouldn’t it be fantastic to be able to concentrate without effort? Not to feel the strain of directing attention, just to experience a relaxed, intense, deep focus? So naturally the million dollar question is: how can attention be improved?
Psychologists are fascinated by the sometimes fantastical claims made for meditation, particularly in its promise of improving attention. It certainly seems intuitively right that meditation should improve attention — after all meditation is essentially concentration practice — but what does the scientific evidence tell us?
