From Brain Hemorrhage To Nirvana – The Strange Journey Of A Woman Studying Her Own Brain

I'm sure many of you have heard of Jill Bolte Taylor. She is the neuroanatomist who had a stroke and managed to study it and recover from it.

In this amazingly brilliant TED talk, Jill gives a stirring speech on the differences between the left and right brain and the complexities and peculiarities of having your brain shut down.

Her inner dialogue during her stroke is both profound and humorous and dares to question the state of Nirvana and how all of us have the ability to reach that state of bliss. It took a stroke to make her realize it but perhaps by watching this video, you won't have to go through the same hassle.

Studies Show You Can Reduce Pain By Dropping The F-Bomb

picture-6Hopefully your children don't get their hands on this article. A study by Keele University researchers found that volunteers in an experiment could withstand pain for a longer amount of time when they were swearing.

The experiment involved submerging the volunteers' hands in ice cold water. Those who were allowed to swear were able to keep their hands in the water for up to 45 seconds longer (on average).

But as with all things, moderation is key. The researchers noted that this phenomenon only exists if swearing in everyday life (when you're not in pain) is kept to a minimum. As Dr. Stephens of the study said, "Swearing is emotional language but if you overuse it, it loses its emotional attachment."

This may also indicate why it's always better to release your emotions rather than keep them bottled up. No one wants to end up as the guy at the top of the clock tower with an automatic weapon.
